Abstract
Research Objective: This study assesses the impact of AI adoption on material wastage in the construction industry in Lagos State, Nigeria, in response to inefficiencies caused by reliance on manual processes.
Methodology: A quantitative descriptive survey was conducted among 164 construction professionals, including architects, engineers, project managers, builders, and quantity surveyors using structured questionnaires and stratified random sampling. Data were analyzed using SPSS v30, applying descriptive and inferential techniques including Relative Importance Index, Kendall’s Tau correlation, regression, and exploratory factor analysis.
Findings: The results indicate moderate AI awareness but limited practical application, with drones for site monitoring and robotic bricklayers showing emerging adoption. Security concerns, lack of understanding, and cost were identified as major barriers. Inferential analysis reveals that complexity negatively influences adoption (-0.588), while labour efficiency (0.778) and cost reduction (0.774) strongly drive AI use.
Conclusion: The study concludes that AI adoption significantly enhances material management efficiency within the construction sector.
